All Time Low’s ‘Therapy’ contains plenty of powerful lines but this is the one that stood out to me despite not being as poignant as the others. Because contrary to popular belief, feelings of depression do not always have to arise from one significant event. Depression does not just happen to people who experience ‘bad’ things or grow up in unfortunate circumstances. And I hate that some others fail to acknowledge that everyone is eligible to feel sad. This precise line portrays that view, that someone who is fortunate enough to have ‘everything’ cannot help but feel a sense of nothingness. Your amount of material possessions, how high your grades are or how much your family loves you, sometimes, as harsh as it sounds, cannot prevent something as dark as depression from consuming you. I guess in these cases we face an existential crisis. You have all these things, but what do they mean? Why are they important? And essentially you begin to question your very being, your purpose and why you’re here. You start to feel that emptiness because you realise that everything you have done, or things you have, don’t mean anything. Just because you have ‘everything’, it does not make you invincible. And just because others ‘have it worse’, it does not undermine your own sadness.
